Sowing and space
Direct-sow into warming soil after frost risk or start a small batch carefully for transplanting without root damage.
Allow about 30 cm of usable depth and roughly 18 cm between plants.
Watering reference: moderate and regular. Adjust to rain, heat, wind, growth stage and container volume.
Planting windows by broad profile
These original editorial windows compare thermal groups, not live weather. Check current frost, heat, rainfall and packet directions.
Mild Pacific coast
Check drainage, salt exposure, local frost pockets and today’s forecast. A sheltered coastal garden can differ sharply from a nearby inland valley.
Dry southern BC interior
Confirm the last local frost, root-zone moisture and current water restrictions rather than treating a provincial average as a planting date.
Keep emergence from drying during hot or windy weather.
Prairie short season
Use a locally proven early cultivar and compare soil warmth, wind and remaining frost-free time. A hardiness zone does not supply an annual sowing date.
Southern Great Lakes
Check the actual site, current heat and storm information, drainage and municipal water rules. Lakeshore, urban and inland sites do not behave alike.
St. Lawrence lowland
Use current local frost and soil observations, and choose material whose label and language meet the rules where it is sold and grown.
Cool Atlantic coast
Prioritize drainage and safe shelter, then check the current forecast. Fog, coast and exposure can make nearby gardens substantially different.
Avoid cold saturated soil and secure all supports.
Mountain and high elevation
Confirm frost risk, soil temperature and access before using covers. Protection must be secure, ventilated and realistic for the site.
Choose an early bush cultivar and confirm enough warm time remains.
Northern very short season
Treat every month band as a screening signal only. Local knowledge, safe season-extension space, material access and the current forecast are essential.
Practical care
- Install climbing support before roots spread.
- Pick pods regularly while tender.
Points to check
- Cold wet soil can rot seed.
- Tall supports and loaded containers must remain safe in wind.

Determining planting dates
Gardening at USask, University of Saskatchewan
Supports separating frost-free period, soil warmth, germination and cultivar maturity. It is prairie-oriented and does not supply the national calendar model.
Use it in context
A month alone cannot resolve cultivar, soil, microclimate or a current extreme.
Use reputable planting material. Use clearly labelled, traceable seed or healthy transplants and check current CFIA, provincial, territorial and local movement or import requirements before ordering or carrying plants, seed, soil or growing media.
