Start a New Zealand food garden from the actual site

Observe the final growing position first

Watch the actual balcony, section, community plot or garden before buying crops. Record direct sun, cold-air pockets, wind, runoff, access and where winter water persists.

A northern location, mild regional label or bright view does not prove that the root zone is warm, drained or frost-free.

Check the site rules and material route

Confirm tenancy, body-corporate, community-garden, fire-access, water and council rules. Keep drains, exits, utility access and shared paths clear.

Use traceable seed or transplants and check current MPI requirements before importing material or moving it through an area with biosecurity controls.

Begin with a small comparison

Choose two or three crops that fit measured light, depth and remaining season. A quick leafy crop, one herb and one larger plant reveal more than filling every container immediately.

Leave room for mature leaves, supports, wet growing mix, watering, drainage checks and safe harvest access.

Keep a local season record

Record the cultivar, start and transplant dates, direct-sun band, frost, heat, wind, watering checks and harvest. Compare several seasons before treating one year as normal.
