Choose pots and beds by usable root space

Compare real depth, volume, drainage, mature size, wet weight, support and access before planting.

Measure the volume roots can use

External pot height is not usable depth. Subtract the base, drainage space, settled compost and watering lip, then consider width and total volume as well.

A crop-page depth is only an editorial reference. Compare it with the narrowest real dimension and the expected mature plant.

Give excess water a safe route

Drainage holes must remain open and lead somewhere that can receive runoff. Crocks or gravel do not replace an outlet or a stable growing medium.

Protect a surface without leaving the pot standing in water, and follow allotment or property rules for runoff.

Treat wet weight and wind seriously

Compost, water, crop, canes and a person leaning over the container create loads that can exceed a casual estimate. Ask a competent person before placing a large bed on a balcony or roof.

Do not improvise railing pots or overhead fixings. Keep paths, exits and shared areas clear.

Match the whole mature plant

Leave room for leaf spread, pollination, harvest, inspection and support. One courgette or pumpkin can need more working area than several shallow leafy crops.
